Most cloth diapers are made from cotton fibers.  Cloth diapers have been in use since early recorded history, so their track record has definitely been proven.  Cloth diaper manufacturers understand that the absorbency of cloth diapers may not be able to compete with the more chemically-advanced disposable diapers, so other options can be added.  For example, microfiber toweling can be inserted into a cloth diaper, or the cloth diaper can have an external polyurethane laminate waterproof layer.  Synthetic fibers like wool, bamboo and hemp as well as cotton are non-absorbent, so inserts made of suede or polyester fleece can be added to the cloth diaper to improve the wicking of moisture away from the skin and helping to prevent diaper rash.

Single-use diapers consume less water than reusables laundered at home, but more than those sent to a commercial diaper service. Washing cloth diapers at home uses 50 to 70 gallons of water every three days, which is roughly equivalent to flushing the toilet five times a day, unless the user has a high-efficiency washing machine. An average diaper service puts its diapers through an average of 13 water changes, but uses less water and energy per diaper than one laundry load at home.”
